National Service Scheme (NSS) was introduced in 1969 with the primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. ‘Education through Service’ is the purpose of the NSS.
The birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, in 37 universities involving 40000 students. NSS is an extension dimension to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in educational institutions. It is being implemented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

The National Service Scheme was introduced in India on September 24 in the year 1969 and implemented from 1970 throughout the country. Shri Kisanlal Nathmal Goenka College of arts and commerce college, Karanja Lad was established in the year 1961. The NSS Unit is there in the college from 1969.

The first NSS Officer of this college NSS unit was Prof.R.C.Katole., then Prof. B.C.Bargal, Dr. Subhash Gadikar, Dr. M.M.Bhave, Dr.V.R.Kodape, Prof. R.R.Bakal., Dr. D.B.Raghuwanshi, Porf. O.S.Pawar., Porf. G.N. Gajbhiye., Dr.P.P.Yeole., And Dr. K.P.Waghmare., completed their responsibility as NSS Programme officer. Now Dr.Sunil Rathod is shouldering the responsibility of this unit.

Since,1991 the Unit organizes Special Camp every year with many regular activities for the wellbeing of society in the adopted village. The college NSS unit was awarded State Level ‘Best Programme Officer’ as well as best NSS Unit for the year 2006-2007.
